Sofwave™ NYC uses a focused pulsed ultrasound technology to deliver high frequency energy which stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin within the skin. It was approved by the FDA in 2019 as a clinically proven procedure for skin tightening and to improve the fine lines and wrinkles on the sagging face and neck.

The new lifting indications from the FDA include lifting the eyebrow, lifting lax submental (beneath the chin) and neck tissue, which can also affect the appearance of lax tissue in the submental and neck regions. These clearances expand our original indication to improve facial lines and wrinkles.

Dec 2022 - Sofwave Medical Announced FDA Clearance of SUPERB™ Technology For Cellulite. With this approval, Dr. Shelton expects to use Sofwave™ as an additional measure to Resonic™ (Not as an individual treatment for cellulite) to help improve cellulite by tightening the surrounding skin laxity.

Dr. Shelton uses Sofwave™ NYC at Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York which was one of the research trial sites providing clinical data to the Sofwave™ company when applying for their Sofwave FDA clearance. He says, this new technology targets the specific dermal layer of the skin avoiding treatment of the deeper subcutaneous layer.

How long is the Sofwave NYC treatment?

It is a quick procedure that takes as little as 90 minutes for the full face and neck region.

How many treatments are needed?

A majority of patients need only one treatment. However some may need a second treatment a few months later such as for the non surgical Sofwave™ brow lift and depending on the patient’s skin condition and the physician’s recommendation. Treatment can be done annually to proactively improve collagen production and combat the hands of time.

Sofwave™ NYC how long does it last?

The new collagen that is formed as a response to Sofwave™ stays in our skin’s dermis but the clinical aging process continues year after year fighting against the improvement Sofwave™ delivers. Therefore, patients are expected to get maintenance treatments but these may be only once every few years. Other patients may choose to be proactive and do their best to avoid needing a facelift in the future and start Sofwave™ early in life before jowls start to sag over the cheek’s jawline and return to Dr. Shelton in his NYC practice, annually for ongoing Sofwave™ treatment in New York City.

How long does it take to show Sofwave™ results?

Gradual improvements usually take 3 – 6 months, or more, to appear but some patients have felt their skin start to tighten after several weeks and may see actual lifting in a couple of months. The collagen regeneration process takes up to a year or more to obtain its maximum improvement.

Is there a recovery period?

There is no prolonged recovery, nor is there any Sofwave™ NYC downtime. Some patients may have mild redness and mild swelling but bruising is rare.

Sofwave™ AND Ultherapy NYC

Both Ultherapy and Sofwave™ treatments use high focused ultrasound energy to heat the skin in order to induce collagen production. Ultherapy’s energy delivers sequential energy beams that form a line horizontally, whereas Sofwave™ lays all its energy across the length of the entire line of treatment at the same time. Both these devices offer a no downtime treatment for skin tightening. Dr. Shelton likes that the Sofwave™ device has a chilling tip which minimizes any welts from forming on his patient’s skin compared to the superficial one of the three transducers that are available with the Ultherapy unit.

During the introduction to the market of Sofwave™ Dr. Shelton immediately realized how this would benefit his patients and began performing a hybrid treatment of Ultherapy in NYC. The two deepest Ultherapy transducers are used and these don’t cause any welts. Dr. Shelton meticulously uses the ultrasound monitor to determine exactly where the deep Ultherapy energy should be targeted. He does not blindly just treat the entire face with many unnecessary lines of treatment. This preserves volume and minimizes any fat wasting possibility which has been a recent concern of many on-line posts.

Immediately after the Ultherapy is completed, Dr. Shelton then uses the more superficial Sofwave™ to target all the important structural layers of the skin in his NYC practice. The two devices independently have produced great results for Dr. Shelton but in most patients, the combined treatment seems to give a better response for the cheeks and neck.
